چکیده
We study the ability of the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (aLIGO) to detect apparent violations of the cosmic censorship conjecture and the no-hair theorem. The cosmic censorship conjecture, which is believed to be true in the theory of general relativity, limits the spin-to-mass-squared ratio of a Kerr black hole, χ ≡ j/m ≤ 1. The no-hair theorem, which is also believed to be true in the theory of general relativity, suggests a particular value for the tidal Love number of a nonrotating black hole (k2 = 0). Using the Fisher matrix formalism, we examine the measurability of the spin and tidal deformability of compact binary systems involving at least one putative black hole. Using parameter measurement errors and correlations obtained from the Fisher matrix, we determine the smallest detectable violation of bounds implied by the cosmic censorship conjecture and the no-hair theorem. We examine the effect of excluding unphysical areas of parameter space when determining the smallest detectable apparent violations, and we examine the effect of different post-Newtonian corrections to the amplitude of the compact binary coalescence gravitational waveform, as given in Arun et al. [Phys. Rev. D 79, 104023 (2009)]. In addition, we perform a brief study of how the recently calculated 3.0 pN and 3.5 pN spin-orbit corrections to the phase [Marset et al. Classical Quantum Gravity 30, 055007 (2013)] affect spin and mass parameter measurability. We find that physical priors on the symmetric mass ratio and higher harmonics in the gravitational waveform could significantly affect the ability of aLIGO to investigate cosmic censorship and the no-hair theorem for certain systems.

No-horizon theorem for spacetimes with spacelike G1 isometry groups
We consider four-dimensional spacetimes (M,g) which obey the Einstein equations G = T, and admit a global spacelike G1 = R isometry group. By means of dimensional reduction and local analyis on the reduced (2 + 1) spacetime, we obtain a sufficient condition on T which guarantees that (M,g) cannot contain apparent horizons. Given any (3 + 1) spacetime with spacelike translational isometry, the n...
متن کاملGravitational-wave Constraints on the Progenitors of Fast Radio Bursts
The nature of fast radio bursts (FRBs) remains enigmatic. Highly energetic radio pulses of millisecond duration, FRBs are observed with dispersion measures consistent with an extragalactic source. A variety of models have been proposed to explain their origin. One popular class of theorized FRB progenitor is the coalescence of compact binaries composed of neutron stars and/or black holes. Such ...
متن کاملInternal structure of non - Abelian black holes and nature of singularity 1
Recent results concerning the internal structure of static sphericallysymmetric non-Abelian black holes in the Einstein–Yang–Mills (EYM) theory and its generalizations including scalar fields are reviewed and discussed with an emphasis on the problem of a generic singularity in black holes. It is argued that in the theories admitting a violation of the naive no-hair conjecture the structure of ...
متن کاملThe Cosmic Coalescence Rates for Double Neutron Star Binaries
This manuscript is an updated version of Kalogera et al. (2004) published in ApJ Letters to correct our calculation of the Galactic DNS coalescence rate. The details of the original erratum submitted to ApJ Letters are given in page 6 of this manuscript. We report on the newly increased event rates due to the recent discovery of the highly relativistic binary pulsar J0737–3039 (Burgay et al. 20...
متن کاملCosmic Censorship, Area Theorem, and Self-Energy of Particles
The (zeroth-order) energy of a particle in the background of a black hole is given by Carter’s integrals. However, exact calculations of a particle’s selfenergy (first-order corrections) are still beyond our present reach in many situations. In this paper we use Hawking’s area theorem in order to derive bounds on the self-energy of a particle in the vicinity of a black hole. Furthermore, we sho...
